On 4 April 2019 Marina Fortuna spoke at the 2019 ESIL (European Society of International Law) Research Forum, in Göttingen, Germany, on ‘The International Rule of Law and Domestic Dimensions: Synergies and Challenges.’
Marina’s presentation, entitled ‘Rule of Custom-Rule of Law. The Case of Interpretation’, focused on the case law of international courts and tribunals. In particular, she talked about the interaction between identification and interpretation of customary international law, on the one hand, and the principle of legality in international criminal law, on the other. The aim of the presentation was to demonstrate how interpretation of customary international law can co-exist with the stringent requirements of international criminal law in a way that foster the rule of law on the international plane.
